Case Studies - River Severn Shropshire Management

The River Severn is the longest river in Britain, rising in Plynlimon in the Welsh mountains and running for 354km through Powys, Shropshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, before feeding into the Bristol Channel.

  • The Shropsire augmentation program is one of the largest augmentation projects in the world, consisting of 64 pumping wells and 91 observation wells.
  • Individual wells withdraw 700 to 1,200 gallons per minute from a Sandstone aquifer located 180 to 660 feet below ground.
  • The maximum design yield of the wellfield is 60 million gallons per day (90 cfs). This water can be delivered to various poings along the River Severn via a network of 73 km of pipeline and 21 outfalls. Nine of the outfalls are designed for discharge rates in excess of 2.6 MGD (4 cfs). Several discharge points are located on key tributaries to the River Severn.
  • Approximately $40 million (2005 US Dollars) has been invested in the project.
